Boffalora
Giuseppe Guglielmo is a winemaker in Valtellina Superior, Northeast of Milan near the Swiss Border. Here he carefully tends to his hand-built, terraced vineyards of Nebbiolo that sit precariously above the small town of Castione Andevenno. These vines are perched between 1400 ft to 4000 ft on the steep walls that envelope the valley. He spent his formative years here in Valtellina but, after coming of age he, like many other of his generation, left for the city. After working in the industrial design for some years he returned in 2002 to take over his father-in- law’s vineyards. Initially, he sold his harvest to a local cooperative until 2009 when he bottled his first wine under the name Boffalora, a reference to the prevalent winds that fill the terraced vines. Giuseppe’s touch is found in every step of the process. Working with the utmost respect for the natural world, his wines are a testament to alpine viticulture and the demanding dedication that is required.
