Les Pentes de Barène

Daniel and Gaëlle Vergnes own and operate Domaine Les Pentes de Barène. Often cited as the smallest Domaine in the Tursan AOC, their vineyard more so resembles a garden than a Domaine. This quaint size aligns with the couples dream of owning an estate that runs on the familial scale. All work, from farming to winemaking to sales are done by the family. The Vergnes’s purchased what would become their estate in 2003, an old farmhouse, an abandoned stable, and a steep hillside meadow. Seeing the potential, they began terracing the limestone hillside that faces the Pyrenees. Planting Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng, Sauvignon Blanc, and Baroque (a rare local variety once prevalent in the early 20th century), conveys their commitment to the preservation of the region’s identity. Les Pentes de Barène’s single vineyard produces distinct wines, both rustic and layered, exposing its charming outlying origin.
